Today was our 100th day in grade one!
We celebrated the milestone of 100 days in grade one by:
-Watching the story "Emily's First 100 Days of School".
-Singing songs that focused on counting to 100 in different ways.
-Completing a page in our Visual Journals by printing and illustrating, "I would like to have 100 _____." and "I would not like to have 100 ___."
-Printing all of the numbers from 1-100 on a Hundreds Chart and using it to play "Race to 100".
-Using the numerals 1 and 0 and 0 (100) to create a cool and creative picture. Please ask you child about the picture that they made.
Have a 100% great evening!

Yesterday we started our day with students sharing with a peer what they did over the long weekend. Students wrote about their weekend with the following sentence starters:
On the weekend I _____.
I went ______.
I saw ______.
I liked _____.
This week we are focusing on the _ink family. Students brainstormed words yesterday and today they recorded words in their Word Work book. Please see how many __ink words your child can print and read for you.
We started to gather words for a KINDNESS Acrostic poem. Students came up with such words as:
K kind
I I message
N Nice
D doing
N nature
E everyone
S smile
S sharing
Students have been learning and practicing new card games to practice making 10. Ask your child to share the 2 games with you they have been playing individually or with a peer.
We have also started our exploration into how animals survive in the winter. Students shared an "I wonder..." statement about animals in winter and today we explored and learned about how some animals survive the winter.
Students exchanged their learning commons books yesterday or today if they returned their books.
In gym, students are learning some basic hockey skills.
In music, students are learning songs about friendship.

All volunteers MUST have a current CBE police clearance in order to volunteer, and therefore we strongly recommend that you complete the paperwork for this A.S.A.P. Please drop by the school office with picture ID to complete this application. If you already have clearance and would like to volunteer, please let you child’s teacher know.
Please note the following dates. Times have yet to be confirmed.
Wet Felting (In-school activity) – April 8th and 9th.
Morning Swimming Lessons (Bus to Canyon Meadows Pool) – May 4th-8th.

What does it mean to be KIND?
We are focussing on kindness this week!
Highlights Of Our Learning:
-Students explored the "__ind" family today. Please see how many words your child can create and spell from this word family. (ie. kind, wind, mind, behind, rind, rewind, bund etc.)
-We continued practising our addition and subtraction skills during math centre time.
-Students had music and gym this afternoon.
-We read several stories about kindness and love and then brainstormed how we show these qualities through our daily actions. Students finished the sentence "Love is..." by sharing ideas in their visual journal. Some ideas included reading together, giving a hug, taking care of the earth, planting flowers for the bees, helping a friend who is hurt, saying please and thank you, playing a board game with your family etc.
F.Y.I.
-We plan on going on a Winter Walk tomorrow, so please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather.
-Last week, your child brought home a list of student names to help them if they are choosing to write Valentine's cards. Cards can also be completed with just the card giver's name.
-Valentine's exchange is on Wednesday.
-There is no school for students on Thursday, Friday or Monday.
Have a great evening!

Happy Family Literacy Day
Highlights of Our Learning:
-We learned many new facts about snowflakes today. Please have your child share their new learning with you.
-In math, we reviewed "Friends of Ten" and then used ten-side dice to practice subtracting from ten. For example, if an 8 was rolled, the equation that would be printed and solved was 10-8=2. If a 3 was rolled, the equation was 10-3=7 etc.
-Students went to Gym and Music.
-Students went to a grade 2/3 classroom so Mrs. Olijnyk could share a new story for Literacy Day.
F.Y.I.
-Please return your child's report card envelope if you have not already don so.
-There is no school for students on Friday, January 31st, as it is a PD Day.

We had a lovely recess outside in the fresh air!! Finally!
Our Learning:
- Today, we continued our writing about winter by exploring what we "FEEL" in the winter. We are working to make our writing more descriptive by adding juicy words. Together, we built on our first idea and made our writing more interesting by comparing these three sentences: "In the winter I feel snow." "In the winter I feel cold snow." "In the winter I feel cold snow that falls on my nose."
- In math, we looked at the strategies "subtracting zero" and "subtracting one". We noted that when we subtract zero the answer does not change and when we subtract one it is like counting backwards by one or thinking about the number that comes right before. Students practiced rolling a 12 or 20 sided dice and then printing corresponding -0 and -1 equations.
- We started to compile a list of words that express how we are unique. By reading the story "Cookies", we were able to list positive qualities such as responsible, respectful, helpful, proud, trustworthy, compassionate, generous, fair etc.
- We had music and gym this afternoon.
F.Y.I.
- We hope you saved the date for our "Celebration of Learning" on February 6th!
- Please return your child's report card envelope to school. The papers that were contained inside are your copies to keep at home.

Yearbook Information
BWS Yearbooks
Bridlewood School is very fortunate this year as one of our parents, who is a photographer and graphic artist/web designer,
has generously volunteered her talent and time to create our yearbook. So many thanks to Melinda Gombert for this.
Melinda has just finished designing the cover for the yearbook.
If you haven’t purchased a yearbook yet and would like to do so, you can do through accessing your fees online
(MyCBE/PowerSchool account). You will need to go to the Goods/Services tab to locate the optional fees,
double click the yearbook line, the fee will then attach to your account, or return this invoice indicating
that you wish to purchase the year book and the fee will be added to your account from the school office.
Deadline for purchase is February 28, 2020.

-Students learned one way to illustrated snowflakes and practiced in their sketchbooks.
-We had music and gym in the afternoon.
