Our first month of grade one is almost over!

Highlights of Our Learning
-Even though there is a LOT of snow on the ground, it is still Fall and today we talked about what we smell in the fall. Students brainstormed ideas and then copied the sentence started "In the fall I smell..." and completed it with a thought of their choice. Some ideas included "In the fall I can smell apples in the orchard." "In the fall I can smell delicious pumpkin pie." "In the fall I can smell yummy hot chocolate." "In the fall I can smell the wood burning in the fireplace."
-We practiced rolling a dice and subitizing (recognizing at a glance) the quantity that was seen. Students then played a game and covered the numeral that is one more or one less than the rolled number.
-We had an active and fun recess outside where we were able to enjoy the fresh snow. Thank you for having your child dressed for the weather.
-Children were assessed on their memorized knowledge of letters of the alphabet and were asked to print all of the letters of the alphabet in uppercase.

Today is officially Orange Shirt Day, but tomorrow we will recognize this at Bridlewood School. Orange Shirt Day is an event that started in 2013. It was designed to educate people and promote awareness about the Native residential school system and the impact this system had on Indigenous communities for more than a century in Canada, and still does today. It is held annually on September 30 in Canadian communities with students and staff being encouraged to wear an orange shirt to school that day.

Tomorrow is Our Terry Fox Run

Highlights of Our Learning
-Today we used Power of Ten cards to practice counting on (to 20) from various numbers that fall between one and ten. We also practiced counting down from those same numbers all the way back to zero. Please have your child demonstrate their understanding of these concepts for you at home.
-All grade one boys visited another grade one classroom to practice their storytelling of "Rooster's Off To See The World" with a new partner. Our boys went to Miss Rinaldi's classroom to share their stories with the girls, and Mrs. Swanson's boys came to our classroom to share their stories with our girls.
-We continued to talk about Terry Fox and how HOPE was so important in his life. The children traced the sole of their shoe and decorated it with a pattern. Terry left many "footprints of hope" for Canada. We also read and sang a new song about Terry Fox and decorated the page before adding it to our poetry book.
-Students went to gym for class with Mrs.O.

-Our Terry Fox Run will be held tomorrow afternoon. Because the forecast is for a cooler day, please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather. We are collecting "Toonies For Terry" and all donations are welcome.
-Tomorrow is Special Lunch Day for those students who ordered online.

Have a great evening!

Welcome Fall!

Highlights of Our Learning:
-We started the day by talking about the season FALL and all of the changes that we notice at this time of the year. Then the children started to create their own Fall book titled "In The Fall". They printed these words on the cover and then completed page one by copying one group-generated idea about what we SEE in the fall. Ideas included, "In the fall I see leaves changing colour." "In the fall I see animals gather food." and "In the fall I see leaves falling down." Please ask your child what idea they printed and illustrated today.
-We worked a patterning activity in math. Students printed their name over and over on grid paper and by colouring each letter a different colour, we are starting to see some beautiful patterns emerge.
-In the afternoon we learned about a Terry Fox. Please have your child tell you what they learned about this Canadian hero.
-Students had music and gym today.

F.Y.I.
-Tomorrow is school picture day.
-Please return all Learning Commons books to school tomorrow.
-Orange Shirt Day is observed on September 30th, but because our grade six students are involved in other activities on that day, BWS will observe Orange Shirt Day on Tuesday, October 1st instead. More information about this day will be forthcoming.

Have a great evening!

-We went outside for gym and walked around the whole big field to see the route that we will be running for the Terry Fox Run next Thursday.

-Please see yesterday's blog for some important dates.

Happy Tuesday!

We have been talking about using our voice when something is bothering us.  "Speak Up Wonder Pup,' is a story we have read to help us stand up for ourselves with confidence.  Students have been using the "I message" to communicate with each other when faced with a conflict in a calm and caring way.  These include:
1. Name
2. I don't like it when...
3. Stop
When faced with a problem students know to use eye contact, body language and voice volume.

We also have read the story "Rooster's Off To See The World."  The students have been making groups of 10 and 12 by using the animals in the story, represented by cubes in specific number and colour combinations.  Students have created a story map to illustrate their story and are working towards being the story teller and acting it out.
