Please be prepared for colder weather tomorrow!

Highlights of Our Learning
-Today we explored the "____ap Family". Please see how many words your child can spell and read from this family of words. As a class, we found 14 words including cap, tap, slap, map, clap, nap, map, lap, rap, gap, trap etc.
-We all had time on Raz Kids and were able to read books together with Miss Rinaldi's students.
-We learned a new way to play "Face Off" with playing cards. By using the 1(Ace) to 10 we turn over two cards at a time from our pile and add them together. Then a partner does the same. Whoever has the highest total (sum) wins that round a gets to keep all of the cards. We also tried playing with the low sum as the winner. Whoever has the most cards at the end of the game is the overall winner. This an easy game to play at home. See what addition strategies your child is using as they play (adding one, counting on, using doubles etc.)
-We reviewed the characteristics of the animal group "Reptiles" and tried drawing a snake, lizard and turtle in our Visual Journals. Tomorrow we will print some facts about reptiles too. Please ask your child to tell you what they have learned about reptiles (ie. cold blooded, dry scaly skin, hatch from eggs, vertebrates, lungs, can live on land or in the water etc.).

-Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on December 5th and 6th. Online bookings will open this Friday.

Have a good evening!

This week we continued to learn about animal groups. Ask your child what makes a fish a fish and what makes an insect an insect.  "They have ____." Children were given the opportunity to learn about each animal group and print 3 facts about each group in their visual journal. They also added an illustration of that animal group.

In literacy centers, students continued to practice their reading skills with a teacher in a small group, on Raz kids, poetry with a group of peers, reading to animals in the forest or reading books at their level.

During word work we have been practicing our sight words, making words and today we did a word detective in book from the classroom to add to our word lists in our word work book.

In math we continued to finish up our math centers. Children practiced the skills of adding 1, adding 2, adding 2 numbers on a domino, adding 2 numbers on a dice and making 10 with the power of ten cards with a partner.

We learned a new poems about birds.

There is no school tomorrow as it is a PD day for teachers.

Parent teacher conference bookings on MyCBE/PowerSchool opens on Friday November 29th at 6pm. Please ensure you sign up for a time to come and meet with your child's teacher to discuss their learning so far in grade 1.

Please send in a pair of earbuds or headphones that your child can use when they are listening to books on RazKids. Since students are working on their individual levels and book choices, it is quite distracting if headphones are not used. Please label the headphones with your child's name. If you do not have an extra pair at home, they are readily available at dollar stores, Walmart etc.

Have a great weekend!!

Insects are EVERYWHERE!!

Highlights of Our Learning
-We worked on the "___ab family" today. See if your child can share some of the words that we brainstormed together. The following words were printed in our Word Work books: tab, dab, jab, nab, cab, fab, lab, crab, stab, scab.
-Please ask your child to tell you what Literacy Centre they worked at today. Students have been trying to build their sight word vocabulary and reading skills during this time.
-Students were given another picture prompt for writing. It was a scene with many signs of fall. After sharing our thoughts and ideas, students were given three sentence starters to try to complete. They were, "I can see...", "I like..." and "I wonder...". Please have your child tell you about their responses.
-We had music and gym in the afternoon.
-We have now learned about three ways to classify animals...mammals, birds and insects. Today the students completed a page in their visual journals to capture the important features of insects. What is the same about all insects? What insects did your child draw?

We learned about the "___at" family today.

Highlights of Our Learning:
-We learned about the "___at" family. Please ask your child to spell and print some of these ___at words for you to determine their understanding of this word family. (ie. cat, hat, mat, rat, bat, pat, flat, that, chat etc.)
-Today we started new Literacy Centres. Students are grouped to match their independent reading levels. Each day, students will work on a different activity such as Guided Reading, Poetry Performance, Reading Classroom Books, Reading from Leveled Book and Reading on RazKids. Please ask your child what activity they participated in today.
-In math we learned how to print an addition equation using the symbols "+" to mean "plus" or "and". We used the symbol "=" to mean "in all", "all together" or "equals". Our focus today was adding one to a number. Students rolled a 10 sided dice and then printed an equation to match the rolled number plus one. For example, is 6 was rolled, the students printed 6+1=7 in their math notebooks.
